Roofing crew tearing off and replacing shingles on a brick house with materials staged on the roof

Knowing how to prepare for a roof replacement in Tennessee takes a lot of the stress out of the week, and most of the heavy lifting is on the crew, not you. A few simple steps the week before still make a real difference: install day goes faster, your yard and belongings stay protected, and nobody in the house is caught off guard by the noise. Here is the checklist we give Middle Tennessee homeowners before a new roof goes on.

One Week Out: Confirm the Plan

Start with the paperwork. Confirm the install date, the shingle line and color, and what happens if rain pushes the schedule. In Tennessee, spring and summer storms move dates more often than anything else, so ask how the crew handles a weather delay and how much notice you will get.

Next, ask whether a permit is needed for your address and who pulls it. If you live in an HOA neighborhood, send the shingle color to the board for approval now, not the morning of. And if you have an insurance claim open, make sure the adjuster has everything they need before the old roof comes off. Once the tear-off starts, the evidence of damage is gone.

Clear the Driveway and the Yard

A roof replacement brings a dumpster, a materials delivery, and a crew truck. Plan to park in the street or at a neighbor’s for the day, and leave room near the house for the dumpster to be placed.

Then walk the perimeter. Move patio furniture, grills, planters, bikes, and kids’ toys at least 15 feet from the house. Cover anything you cannot move, like a pool, hot tub, or delicate landscaping, with a tarp. Mow the lawn a day or two before so the magnetic nail sweep at the end of the job can do its work in short grass.

Inside the House: Walls, Attic, and Garage

Tear-off is loud, and the vibration travels through the framing. Take down framed photos, mirrors, and shelf decor on the top floor, especially on exterior walls. Pull fragile items off high shelves.

If you store things in the attic, cover them with old sheets or move them out. Some dust and granules will fall through the decking when the old shingles come off, and if the crew replaces rotted decking, a little daylight may show for an hour or two. The same goes for an open-rafter garage: cover the cars or park them outside.

Plan for People, Pets, and Neighbors

Expect hammering and nail guns from early morning until late afternoon. If anyone in the house works from home, sleeps days, or has a newborn, a day out is worth planning. Pets usually do better at a friend’s house or a daycare, and at minimum they should stay inside and away from the work zone.

A quick heads up to your neighbors goes a long way, particularly on tight lots in places like Franklin, where a dumpster and a truck can crowd a shared street. Our Franklin roofing team handles a lot of these close-quarters installs, and a short note on the neighbor’s door keeps everyone friendly.

Install Day and the Walkthrough After

Most homes in Middle Tennessee are torn off and reroofed in one to two days, which we break down in how long it takes to replace a roof. You do not need to be home the whole time, but be reachable by phone in case the crew finds soft decking or another surprise that needs a quick decision.

When the last shingle is on, do a walkthrough. Look for nails in the driveway and flower beds, check that gutters and downspouts are clear of debris (if they are not, gutter cleaning is an easy fix), and make sure you have the warranty paperwork and final invoice in hand. Keep before and after photos with your home records.
